Video by Corey Arnold @arni_coraldo | After discovering a black bear denning down for the day in a crawl space under an abandoned house in South Lake Tahoe, California, I set up a camera trap with strobes, as well as a cheap video trail cam to capture the bears’ reaction to my camera trap. That night a massive bear appeared and sat for 10 minutes, assessing the safety of his departure into the neighborhood. Then, once he emerged, the flash from my strobe startled him off.

Black bears are getting more comfortable living closer to humans, where a year’s supply of unsecured garbage can supplement their natural diet. The behind-the-scenes video is from my National Geographic feature story “Why Cities Are Going Wild.” Read more at the link in bio.
