Hey, are you the Moon? Because you shine even when it’s dark! 🌔 This Saturday Science is all about our Earth’s Moon.

The Moon is our only natural “satellite.”The Moon does not make its own light, but reflects the Sun’s light - that’s where moonlight comes from!

The Sun always illuminates half of the Moon while the other half remains dark, but how much we are able to see of that illuminated half changes as the Moon travels through its orbit around Earth.

From Earth, we see the Moon go through eight different phases. It takes 29.5 days for the Moon phases to go through one complete cycle.

The Moon’s orbit around Earth isn't a perfect circle. When a full moon lines up with its closest point to Earth in its orbit, we see a supermoon! Its average distance is 238,855 miles (384,400 kilometers) from Earth. It took the Apollo astronauts about three days to travel to the Moon.

If you go to the Moon, bring a big coat! No, wait, bring shorts! Or just bring both - the temperature on the Moon’s surface varies from -414 to 253 degrees Fahrenheit (-248 to 123 degrees Celsius). In reality, astronauts who go to the Moon wear special suits that keep them comfortable, provide air to breathe, and protect them from the Sun’s radiation.

Gravity is also less on the Moon! Gravity is the force that keeps our feet on the ground and keeps the Moon orbiting Earth, and it’s part of what determines how much we weigh. The Moon’s gravity is just 1/6th of Earth’s. If you weighed 100 pounds (45 kilograms) on Earth, you’d weigh just 16.6 pounds (7.5 kilograms) on the Moon!

The first human landing on the Moon was on July 20, 1969. Twenty-four humans have traveled from the Earth to the Moon so far, and 12 have walked on the lunar surface.

And we’re going back! Artemis is NASA’s set of missions to learn more about the Moon! The Artemis missions will enable us to learn more about space exploration, inspire new generations and help make the giant leap to taking astronauts to Mars. Artemis will also land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon!

You’re a part of this too - today’s kids are the #ArtemisGeneration! Learn more about Artemis and the Moon at the link in our bio!
