Photos by @andrea_frazzetta | The Democratic Republic of the Congo was my first real great experience as a photojournalist. I was 27 years old when I reached the country and was hosted by a dear friend whose uncle was a missionary. During my time there, I worked on several stories: the fight against AIDS in hospitals, religious fanaticism, the first democratic elections, the recovery of child soldiers who had been exploited in a recent, terrible conflict.

I slept at the missionaries in the Limete district. In the mornings, I volunteered at children’s rehabilitation centers. I played soccer with the kids and swept the floors. I went to parties, ate fried ants, bathed in the Congo River, spent my first Christmas away from home under the stars in a forest. I was stopped by militiamen in the middle of the night, slept in the offices of an Italian NGO, scrounged meals at the UN canteen, and started to understand French. I cried, I laughed, I was scared, I was happy. I almost missed my flight home. Though I never had the courage to return, the photographer I became in those days continued to travel with me forever.
