Ready for this?? Someone reported Dennis and me to social services with “suspicion of concern” for the wellbeing of our daughter😳

Whoever filed it cited concerns about Lea being present for the birth of her brother, me choosing to birth at home, and my opting out of allopathic prenatal care. Apparently this was enough for social services to investigate and call us to a meeting.

The interesting thing about this whole situation is that we knew absolutely nothing about it. We’re notoriously bad at opening our mailbox (all of our bills are electronic) and we never saw the letters we received, calling us to a meeting with a case worker. A few weeks later they sent another letter announcing that even though we didn’t show up, they concluded after an independent investigation that our children were not at risk for any harm, and they wouldn’t be opening a case on us. So there was a whole drama from start to finish - and we missed it! I feel so very grateful that we’ve been too lazy to get to the mailbox this past month because had I read that first letter it would have generated an enormous amount of anxiety in me. Instead, I got to witness this insane, dystopian drama after it was all concluded and over with.

Obviously Lea is well. I can’t think of a more blessed and abundant child in every area of life ranging from the emotional to material. The idea that being present for the birth of her brother in any way could have been harmful… It blows my mind!

For as long as she lives, she will know the life altering love that comes along with being present for the birth of a child. She will never see birth as something scary or traumatic. It won’t be foreign to her, the way it was for me, and it won’t feel dangerous, or risky, or impossible. When she thinks of birth her mind will turn to family. To intimacy. To lighting candles and holding hands and having breakfast around the kitchen table with her new baby brother. She will remember the absolutely normal, beautiful and simple process that a physiological birth actually is.

And when - or if - she chooses to be a mother herself one day… She will know in her bones the sheer power of being a woman.
