Photo by @estherhorvath | In Germany's Black Forest National Park, spruce, fir, and beech trees surround the Wilder See, a remote mountain lake. In 1911, the forest around the lake was designated a protected area. Every saw, every axe has been resting there for more than 110 years. Beech-fir primeval forests can accommodate thousands of species from the categories of mushrooms, lichens, mosquitoes, snails, beetles, and mammals alone. Many of these species are dependent on dead wood, which makes up a great part of a primeval forest's total amount of wood.
