We couldn’t let #WorldChessDay pass without sharing the Lewis Chessmen, some of the most iconic gaming pieces in the world ♟
The chess pieces were found on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland in around 1831, but it remains a mystery who they belonged to or how they came to the island.
Think you know the players on the board? Take a guess at which roles these charismatic characters play, and then check your answers below…
♟ Pawn: The pawns, shaped like small round-topped pillars, sit at either side of the bottom row. One is decorated with a filigree pattern of leaves and vines.
🐴 Knight: No surprises here – the knights are riding horses!
✝ Bishop: The bishop stands in the middle, holding a crozier and a book.
🏰 Rook: The rooks flank the central figure, their swords drawn. One is depicted as a berserker, biting his shield!
🤴 King: On bottom row in the centre, the king is seated on a throne and holds a sheathed sword.
👸 Queen: The queen sits enthroned beside her husband, resting her chin on her hand.
