The technique opened up new and exciting possibilities, allowing Matisse, as he described, to 'paint with scissors' and 'draw straight into colour'. ✂️ If you look closely at this work you'll see small pin holes where coloured pieces of paper were moved around to create the spiral shape of a snail's shell. 🐚 ‘It is not enough to place colours, however beautiful, one beside the other; colours must also react on one another,' he said.
