テート・ギャラリーさんのインスタグラム写真 - (テート・ギャラリーInstagram)「The summer holidays are here - time to see some ART! 💛 Henri Matisse's Snail is one of the first artworks in our Start Display at Tate Modern. 🐌 Matisse loved making art, but when he was in his 60s his health made it difficult for him to continue painting. Instead he started to create colourful collage works known as 'gouaches découpées' made by cutting or tearing paper, painted first with gouache, into different shapes. The technique opened up new and exciting possibilities, allowing Matisse, as he described, to 'paint with scissors' and 'draw straight into colour'. ✂️ If you look closely at this work you'll see small pin holes where coloured pieces of paper were moved around to create the spiral shape of a snail's shell. 🐚 ‘It is not enough to place colours, however beautiful, one beside the other; colours must also react on one another,' he said. The most exciting detail in Matisse's collage (if you look very closely) is a tiny purple snail, carved into the top left corner of the composition. 💜🐌 See if you can spot it on your next visit!
