For decades, she has made work that celebrates the female identity. 'Through the Flower' is amongst Chicago’s most well known works. Not only is it important to her as a symbol and an image, but as a philosophy of life. In her autobiography of the same title she writes 'I used the flower as a symbol of femininity…my first steps in being able to make clear, abstract images of my feelings as a woman.' 'Through the Flower' is also the name of a charity organisation founded by Judy Chicago in 1977 that has highlighted women’s achievements for over 40 years and continues to provide opportunities for learning about women’s history through art.
