Due to its kilometer-long stretch of inns and shops, it became known as “Narai of a Thousand Houses.” Even now, remnants of the Edo Period, such as the fine lattice shades and lanterns of the inns, remain here, and the area is designated an important preservation district for groups of traditional buildings. With local food that harkens back to Narai’s post-town roots and traditional crafts like Kiso lacquerware, there’s plenty to find in this ancient town.
