A new photobook by @thomashoepker, Italia, takes us to the towns and cities of 1950s Italy 🇮🇹
Fresh out of high school, Thomas Hoepker made regular journeys to Italy with his Leica MP camera, amassing a collection of over 10,000 negatives between 1956 and 1959. Here, Hoepker approached the streets as an explorer rather than a tourist, crafting cinematic compositions of social encounters and daily rituals, all through a lens of compassion and humor – reminiscent of the neorealist cinema at the time.
Italia, published by @buchkunstberlin, sees 124 of Hoepker's early-career photographs brought to new life, accompanied by a sensitive essay from author and director Raúl Morales Barcia.
