The zoo in Ghent was also home to two lions, who were named Flandria and Brabantia.  One 18th century biographer even recounts a scene in which a lion was brought into Rubens’ studio, and then tickled to make roar so that its mouth could be painted in a suitably fierce fashion! 🦁  Rubens’ style is characterized by its dynamic energy, sensual elegance, and dramatic lighting.
