Made over 2,000 years ago, this bronze belt plaque is an early example of an iconic motif – a tiger attacking an ibex 🐯🦌
This is an ‘Ordos tiger’, named for the region inhabited by nomadic peoples living between the Mongolian steppe and the Yellow river. These groups popularised the use of plaques, which would have been worn on the belt, depicting tigers defeating other creatures.
In traditional Chinese culture the tiger was a symbol of bravery. This swirling design was used for centuries to come, and recreated in other precious materials like jade and gold ✨
