They called it the Electrowerkz, and started hosting goth club nights.⁠ ⁠ “At the time we opened, people would put signs in pubs saying, ‘No punks allowed, no weirdos,’” says Dette. “So we decided to open a place where only we could get in.”⁠ ⁠ Over 35 years later, goths from all over the globe still gather for Slimelight – the longest running dark club in the world. A mecca for fetishists, punks, the queer community and fans of black lipstick, the venue has provided a safe haven for alternative subcultures for decades.⁠ ⁠ “I’d say the nights where I got really trashed and had sex in the toilets were probably the best ones,” says Dave Darcy, a 30-year veteran Slimelight attendee.⁠ ⁠ Since Mak’s death in 2020, the event has dropped down to a once-a-month affair. But if anything, this has only strengthened the loyalty of its followers. “When Mak died, it was almost as bad as when my father died,” says Dave. “I was thinking, ‘What could you do that would make Mak happy?’ And the answer was, if you keep going to the club and keep trying to make the club a success, that’s the way that you keep people alive.”」8月11日 1時10分
