If you've ever found yourself thinking "Oh yes, I would love to see a man shovel down nine hot dogs in under a minute please," then you're probably one of the large throngs of people who have been tickled by competitive eating. Which could be considered a sport – if sport means putting yourself through a huge endurance test.⁠

You know the drill: men and women quickly stuff tens of thousands of calories in their face as fast as humanely possible in order to win prizes. On their way to a hopeful win, these competitors battle through nausea, the shits and heartburn. In extreme cases, there are deaths – mostly due to choking. You can also fracture your jaw. Fun!⁠

Of course, immaculate hand-eye coordination and strategic multitasking also goes into winning an eating contest. You’ll probably be immediately disqualified if you throw up (unless you swallow it back down), but the competitive eating world will call this a “reversal” to save you from the shame. All of this, to be crowned a winner.⁠
