In 20 years of heavyweight taekwondo, I have never been knocked down. I have had many hidings, but win lose or draw I have never gone down. The same stands for Kayak- onward and upwards. I'll start by saying it feels great to be back competing. It doesn't matter what the sport, I love the feeling of high pressure, high stress competition. Kayak certainly gives me that. It's probably quite strange but I no longer feel any kind of significant nerves when I compete. Its all just excitement. Just feel blessed to even have the opportunity to be out there. I competed and completed my first ever 1000m which was a highlight. That makes my first ever 200, 500 and 1000m a world championship race. And more importantly I was able to make amends for my previous 500 which we couldn't complete thanks to a pre finish line swim. The next most important lesson is that there is a lot to work on and that also excites me. I love competing with the worlds best, it highlights exactly where I stand, good or bad. I love growth. With that growth has come a steadfast belief in self. I no longer fear criticism, or loss. The only fear I have is that I do not give my absolute best however that looks at the time. I am excited to finally start the journey with a new kayak specific coach Julian of paddle to fitness. He has already targeted all my shortcomings in the sport and we look forward to fixing them. I never felt puffed in any race - a sign that my current limits are around technique and balance. Cross country skiing gave me the lesson of pain. That we can push far beyond what we think we can. I look forward to applying that once technique and balance are fixed. Thank you to Tim our Olympic physio for flying across from London to assist. To Ty for always ensuring I travel in style! And that brings an end to the 2023 World Championships.
So many great lessons!
