I found and scanned some old shots of @クリス・シャーマ today. As I was looking through them, I was reminded just how different Chris’ climbing style was from other top climbers from that era. It’s true that his feet slipped and cut a lot when he was starting out. It’s also true that his technique was more dynamic than anyone else’s at the time and that he progressed through the grades faster than anyone ever had—in just two years he went from 5.11 to 5.14c. That would be impressive in any era, but 30 years ago nothing like that had happened and it scrambled a lot of brains.

7. Surf Safari (13d) 1995.
8. Getting a big head, 1994.
9. Supertweak (14c) 2nd ascent, 1996.
10. Trying Biographie extension (5.15a) in 1997 (he made the FA 4 years later).
