This week in 2008, Brian released his seventh studio album, That Lucky Old Sun. As a concept album, it largely derives from the old standard of the same name. Said Brian: “I bought the Louis Armstrong version, learned it, changed the chords around and tossed it to my band.” Adding to the album’s suite-like feel are four spoken narrations written by SMiLE collaborator Van Dyke Parks that paint images of L.A. life with his usual sense of wordplay. Stand-out tracks include the title song, “Morning Beat,” “Good Kind of Love,” “Can’t Wait Too Long,” “Going Home,” and the magnificent piano ballad, “Midnights’ Another Day.” What’s your favorite track?
