The 43rd @asean Summit kicked off yesterday.

The Leaders’ Declaration on ASEAN as an Epicentrum of Growth reaffirms our commitment to expand collaboration into priority areas such as digital and green economies, as well as food security.

We welcomed the launch of negotiations on the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA). A high-quality DEFA can unlock the immense potential of the region’s digital economy, and benefit our businesses and people. We also discussed other ways to make ASEAN future-ready and create growth opportunities for its peoples.

This is a period of great geopolitical and economic uncertainty. How ASEAN responds to today’s challenges will determine whether ASEAN centrality can hold in the years ahead. We need to increase engagement of our external partners in an open and inclusive way. The ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific creates a platform to do so. We discussed how to provide multiple opportunities for all major powers to engage in our region constructively. By remaining united on key regional issues, and giving major powers a meaningful stake in our region, we can ensure ASEAN’s continued relevance and competitiveness in a post-pandemic world. – LHL
