Prince Mateen is visiting Singapore on a Lee Kuan Yew Exchange Fellowship. Our relations with Brunei are multifaceted and special. Working together with Prince Mateen’s father, His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, Singapore and Brunei have stood shoulder to shoulder through various crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic. A key pillar of our partnership is defence. In March, His Majesty graced the commissioning ceremony of the first of two Fearless-class Patrol Vessels which the RSN will transfer to Royal Brunei Navy. We are also very grateful to Brunei for allowing SAF personnel to train there. Many Singaporean soldiers have indelible memories of their jungle training in Temburong. Singapore and Brunei are the two smallest Southeast Asian nations. Given the uncertainty and volatility in the world today, we must continue to work closely together on shared challenges and help keep ASEAN a cohesive and effective organisation. I am confident that the next generation of leaders on both sides will take our relationship forward. I wish His Royal Highness a fruitful stay in Singapore.
