Who was Empress Dowager Cixi? Cixi was the most powerful woman and controversial political figure in recent Chinese history. Her regency stretched over four decades in the 1800s and she was the foremost patroness of late Qing court art, including porcelains.
The Levy Collection is one of the most comprehensive private collections encompassing important specimens of late Qing imperial porcelains. A successful and dynamic woman herself, Barbara Levy clearly identified with Cixi and began collecting the Empress Dowager’s commissions in earnest.
The collection grew to such a level that she and Lester created their own ‘gallery’ for the group – a secret place where only the most honored guests were invited to share the porcelains’ dazzling colors, delicate decorations, and ambitious scales. These works and more star in the upcoming Important Chinese Art sale on 19 - 20 September, on view now at #SothebysNewYork.
