These shoes reflect the journey of journalist Dunia Elvir. Born in La Ceiba, Honduras, she moved to Los Angeles, California, as an undocumented student. A radio announcement soon had her dreaming of becoming a journalist. Elvir first worked in radio and then as a TV news presenter.
In 2006, she covered the large immigration reform march in downtown Los Angeles for KVEA-52 Telemundo, walking alongside the protestors in high heels while pregnant. The nearly-destroyed pair of heels she wore during one of the protests—as well as these sneakers, made by a fan—are on display in "¡De Última Hora! Latinas Report Breaking News" at our @国立アメリカ歴史博物館. The exhibition highlights the life and work of seven Latina journalists who wrote the first draft of U.S. history through their reporting to Spanish speakers in the United States.
