Muholi turns the camera on themself in their ongoing series, titled 'Somnyama Ngonyama' ('Hail the Dark Lioness' in Zulu), made up of powerful self-portraits taken around the world. These striking black and white portraits use everyday household objects like sunglasses and wire sponges to create elaborate clothing and hair pieces. The artist described their 'Somnyama Ngonyama' series as 'an unflinchingly personal approach I have taken as a visual activist to confronting the politics of race and pigment in the photographic archive. It is a statement of self-presentation through portraiture.'
