💐 Known as Tony to her close friends, British artist Clare Atwood painted portraits, landscapes, and depictions of war scenes. Many of Atwood's scenes capture a moment in time—here we see the richly decorated flat of actor Sir John Gielgud, his cat snoozing on a chair. 

Atwood was successful in her lifetime, and held her very first solo exhibit in 1893. At the outbreak of World War One, the artist was commissioned by the Canadian government and the UK Women’s Voluntary Service to capture the war effort, leading to some of her most famous artworks. 

As well as a recognised artist, Atwood was also known for her scandalous 'ménage à trois'. She was was openly lesbian and lived with two other women, writer Christabel 'Chris' Marshall and actress Edith 'Edy' Ailsa Craig, in a polyamorous relationship. The relationship was a happy one and the three requested to be buried side-by-side.
