In a world of imagery, American photographer Errol Stanley Sawyer calls on us to not allow our feelings to be crushed by a need for consumption. His carefully composed black and white images encourage us to look more closely at everyday situations that may otherwise be overlooked—he calls them 'chance encounters in our day-to-day intercourse with life'.⁣

Sawyer didn't study art. Instead he read books to teach himself the skills he needed to take photographs. 'Too much technique inhibits the process,' he said. 'The way you see things is the most important, and that is simply a reflection of how you live your life.'⁣

Sawyer has often photographed people and perspectives in public and semi-public spaces, such as parks, streets, and underground stations. This selection from Tate's collection are from the artist's portfolio documenting London's East End.
