President Nayib Bukele’s crackdown on gang activity in El Salvador permitted police to arrest anyone they considered suspicious. “It’s impossible to say how many innocent Salvadorans have been arrested and detained, but there’s little question that ordinary citizens have been swept up despite having done nothing wrong,” Jonathan Blitzer writes. Even la isla El Espíritu Santo—an island that requires permission for non-residents to visit, and, historically, has never had gang problems—has been affected. The community was stunned when government authorities arrested five local boatmen, later claiming that the men were collaborating with gangs. Twenty more arrests on the island followed.
