Laguna de Aculeo is no longer parched! NASA satellites began to detect water in August, after an intense winter storm dropped as much as 15 inches of rain. These images show the lake on May 18 and in early September.

Image 1: Landsat 9 image from May 18, 2023. A dry lakebed creates an irregular kidney shape in the center of the image, with darker and lighter rings extending out from it. The area around the lakebed is mottled greens and browns.

Image 2: The same area in a Landsat 9 image from September 7, 2023, following heavy rains. In this image, the lake has been halfway filled; the lake itself appears swirls of blues and greens. The area around the lake is almost entirely green, surrounded by healthy vegetation.
