‘Charred Beloved I’ by Arshile Gorky

Painted in the wake of the Armenian-American artist’s devastating studio fire in Sherman, Connecticut, Arshile Gorky’s ‘Charred Beloved I’ captures a pivotal moment of renewal and hope.

After the tragic fire, Gorky worked for several weeks in a 17th-floor ballroom on Fifth Avenue, where he created four magnificent paintings, known as the ‘Ballroom Series’, commemorating the numerous paintings, drawings and books that were lost in the fire. Sharp black biomorphic forms with swathes of sienna, crimson and midnight gray, suggesting flames, smoke and ash, mark the light-filled surface. The present lot, which stands out among the series for its visually complex and bright composition, is one of two from the series that remains in private hands.

The last Surrealist painter and the first of the Abstract Expressionists, Gorky is widely considered the most influential artist of the post-war era. This November, Christie’s will offer Gorky’s masterpiece ‘Charred Beloved I’ (1946) as a highlight of the 20th Century Evening Sale in New York.
