The goose was associated with St Martin of Tours, a 4th-century saint who founded some of the first monasteries in France, and is best known for cutting his cloak in half to share it with a beggar. Legend suggests that St Martin once concealed himself inside a barn filled with geese to avoid becoming ordained as a bishop. However, their noisy squawking betrayed St Martin’s hiding place: he was ordained in 371, and the goose was used as his symbol from then on 🦢 🔎 Pilgrim badge showing a goose wearing a necklace.
