Congratulations to María Magdalena Campos-Pons on being named a 2023 MacArthur Fellow!
Campos-Pons is one of twenty global recipients of the award known as the “genius grant.”
Fittingly, in “The One That Carried the Fire (2011), shown here, a yellow orb emerging from the figure’s head gives life to an accumulating mass of brown, pink, orange hair, flames, and flowers. The three-panel watercolor painting includes collaged hair, and alludes to the depth and breadth of the artist’s mind as well as the purifying rage of the orisha Changó, boiling under a placating facade.
See more of the multidisciplinary artist’s genius on display in María Magdalena Campos-Pons: Behold through January 14, 2024.
We also extend our congratulations to collection artist Dyani White Hawk, another artist named a MacArthur Fellow this year.
