But everything changed about 35 years ago, when Don Jorge Baltazar, a famous and charismatic volador, broke with tradition by encouraging his four daughters to participate. These sisters, along with a few other women, opened the doors for new generations of flying women. Because of their efforts, local support for voladoras has grown, and girls as young as 9 years old now take part in the dance. Many of the performers I’ve met had never trained before their first flight; they were simply brave enough to climb to the top and jump off.
