Tejano originates in Texas, influenced by polka, rock, conjunto and mariachi, with roots in working class Mexican American communities. Rising to fame in the late 1980s, Selena exposed the already-popular genre to mainstream audiences, helping to transform the regional genre into an international phenomenon. She won a Grammy award for the best Mexican American album in 1994.   Selena’s hard-won fame was cut short at the age of only 23 when she was murdered by her friend and former business manager, but her music and fashion continue to transcend generations.
