During the cold winter months in Tampa, diving is hard, so I found myself longing for change in my life and contemplating where to spend the next few months. Since my house was being sold and my belongings were already in storage, I had the freedom of mobility. After careful consideration, I decided on Austin. Not only did I have close friends there whom I considered family, but it was also a vibrant city, which was exactly what I needed as a newly single person with a book about to come out. I packed up my car and embarked on a solo 17-hour drive from Tampa to Austin. Upon arriving, I purchased makeup, a curling iron, and other girlie shit that I don't typically use. New city, new Valentine. Whatever the F that means. A few days after settling in, I was invited to the Spence's for dinner on Valentine's Day. Their 21yo niece was there and I asked her if she knew anyone my age in Austin. She mentioned a guy who was cool and adventurous, and I asked if he hung out with girls her age (can’t be meeting a creep 😂). She reassured me that he didn't, so I asked her to connect me with him. Nothing to lose. The following day, just as I was about to leave for the Bahamas, I received a message from Daniel. He was also away so we texted for a couple weeks, often until early morning, getting to know each other. The day I returned to Austin, he picked me up from the airport, marking the first time we saw each other in person. We went for a drink and spent hours chatting. A couple of nights later, I found myself staying at his house, and from that moment on, I never left. Our relationship quickly became intense, but it never felt rushed. When something is genuine, things tend to progress rapidly. When you know what you're looking for and find it, you don't waste time playing games; you just grab it.
