Would you swim in a jungle cenote? …that Mayans believed were the gates to the underworld and may or may not have sent human sacrifices down into them? 😬

I love swimming in cenotes (pronounced “seh-note-tays”) but they’re def a little creepy. It feels like a snake or alligator are going to just pop out at the surface (so far there’s only one cenote with a resident alligator though), and although it’s clear underwater, there’s still an eerie, chilling feeling…but that could just be the cold temperatures.

I’m fascinated with cenotes because they are big, deep holes that all connect underground and make up the entire “underworld” of Riviera Maya (as in, if you drilled a hole anywhere in Tulum, you would reach the underground cave system).

I believe they were caused when the meteor hit in this area, that allegedly also killed the last dinosaurs 🤓

Anyway, this is why it’s important not to flush paper down the toilets here…bc it ends up in the clear waters below 😭

There’s thousands of cenotes near Tulum, but this one, called “Cenote Cristal” was really easy to get to, pretty cheap (150 pesos, so about $7), and had cute private picnic tables all around it!
