It was Gaetz who took it upon himself to block McCarthy from the speakership in January, joining with 19 others to deny him a majority until he agreed to crippling concessions. One of those was the ability for a single member to bring the motion to vacate, which Gaetz then deployed to remove McCarthy this month.⁠ ⁠ While critics accuse Gaetz of attention-mongering, he insists he is about outcomes, not headlines.
