Executed in 1961, Agnes Martin’s ‘Grey Stone II’ is a remarkably early example of her signature “grid” paintings, which stand as the artist’s most influential contribution to the discourse on painting in contemporary art.

Painstakingly rendered using pencil, oil paint, and gold leaf, ‘Grey Stone II’ is further distinguished as one of only five works from the artist’s corpus featuring this rare gilt material. Here, Sotheby’s Senior Specialist @courtstarrk explains more.
