“It is about New York—New York seemed to me at the time like a gigantic carousel in continuous motion—on many levels—lines approaching swiftly and curving back again forming an intricate ballet of reflections and sounds.” – Hedda Sterne
In the Road series, Sterne pioneered the use of spray paint—a material that had only hit hardware store shelves a year or two before—to create vigorous, active gestures that evoked the speed and motion of her urban environment. Here, Sotheby’s @macphersonkelsey explains more.
Originally acquired directly from the artist and held in the same collection for nearly 70 years, ‘Road #7’ from 1956 is one of the few works from Sterne’s pivotal series still in private hands—and will head to auction at #SothebysNewYork in the Modern Evening sale on 13 November, presented in partnership with @samsungus.
