Let’s face it – not all kids will be okay with you saying “NO” to all candy on Halloween.

Instead of fighting them, here are some ways to mitigate damage on Halloween to make it as healthy as possible.

1. Fill them up with a nutritious, high-protein dinner: Kids are less likely to binge on candy if they’re already filled up from dinner

2. Stay hydrated: Making sure your child stays properly hydrated will reduce their chances of over-eating sugar. Hydration is also important for washing away sugar from the teeth that can lead to dental caries.

3. Ask for a candy trade-in: Offer your child a tempting trade-in, such as, “I’ll trade you five pieces of your candy for a movie night!”

4. Educate but don’t push: Let your kids know that candy doesn’t make you feel great. Simply saying “no” will likely just end in a fight and more rebellion.

5. Let them do their thing: Experience is usually the best way to learn. If, after educating them about the not-so-healthy nature of Halloween candy, they still insist, then let them have it. Chances are, they won’t feel too great after and will choose a better option next time.
