It takes a village to provide people with the help they need after a disaster. ⛑️

Ricky Christmas experienced this firsthand when Red Cross volunteers from across the country worked together to provide him with essential medical and food assistance after Hurricane Idalia destroyed his home in Tallahassee, Florida.

Ricky is a military veteran with unique medical needs, and his condition was further aggravated when he fell while trying to evacuate his home.

When he arrived at the Red Cross shelter, volunteers on site worked with other volunteers, like Cathy Gordon from the @RedCrossMO, who were supporting the response virtually to help address Ricky’s immediate needs.

“I was the behind-the-scene person to work on Ricky’s case after he returned to his home,” Cathy said. “My number one task was to find him, then to get his documents updated.”

Because Ricky’s medical needs were so unique, he required specific resources like a special kind of walker to assist him in getting around and air conditioning, a necessity prescribed for him by his VA physician.

Cathy worked diligently with the Veterans Administration to provide Ricky with those resources. Once approved, Red Cross volunteers Elizabeth Quinn and Dr. Richard Zlotnic, who were deployed in Florida, took Ricky shopping to get his durable medical equipment.

“He was just so sweet,” Elizabeth said. “When we arrived at his house, he invited us in and asked if he could do anything for us. You could see the house was damaged and there was water coming in. We told him we needed nothing, that we were there to help him.”
