The source for the text in Edward Ruscha’s painting DAILY PLANET is deliberately hard to pin down. Although it might connect with the natural imagery behind it, it is also the name of the newspaper Clark Kent writes for in the Superman comics. Ruscha has described the artwork’s title as ‘mysterious and teasing’.

To create this painting Ruscha sprayed a thin layer of paint onto the canvas, then worked the image up in acrylic paint using a medium-sized brush. The text was applied using stencils, and uses Boy Scout Utility Modern, a typeface created by the artist and described by him as a sort of ‘no-style’.
