His work has been crucial to the development of street photography and the acceptance of colour photography as an art medium in the 1960s. In the beginning of his career Meyerowitz was ‘on the street just walking up and down the city, and looking, looking, looking,’ and snapped the world around him in black and white. Soon he realised that with a colour film he could describe more things. He says: ‘colour plays itself out along a richer band of feelings – more wavelengths, more radiance, more sensation’.
