Pickle dishes held the pickled fruits and nuts served during the dessert course in colonial Philadelphia households. Unlike their more complex relative, the pickle stand, single pickle dishes could be easily moved about the table. This pickle stand was made of more than seventy-two elements. Each element was individually formed from a refined clay called porcelain, and then decorated with cobalt blue, covered with a clear glaze, and fired at a high temperature.
