テート・ギャラリーさんのインスタグラム写真 - (テート・ギャラリーInstagram)「📸 Born Joseph Tseng in Hong Kong in 1950, the artist later known as Kwong Chi moved with his family to Vancouver in the 1960s. After studying at the University of British Columbia, then at the École supérieure d’arts graphiques in Paris, Tseng followed his sister Muna to New York in 1978, where he settled down in the East Village. Soon after arriving, Tseng began the series East Meets West, photographing himself at iconic tourist sites around the world. Made at a time when concerns around identity politics were brewing, Tseng’s images subversively explore notions of cultural identity. Rigidly positioned, wearing a Zhonghan or ‘Mao suit’ and a deadpan expression, his images reveal the perceived and at times stereotypical 'differences' between the West and East, the mainstream and marginal. Tseng spent much of his adult life in New York, where he became a key figure of the downtown art scene in the 1980s. Part of an intimate circle of artists, Tseng developed a career around his performative self-portraits, as well as documenting the art scene and nightlife of downtown New York. In 'The Gang's All Here' Tseng stages an image of his friends, including Keith Haring (top right) and Kenny Scharf (kneeling, bottom right). Tseng crouches to the right and captures the image via a remote. Tseng was known as Keith Haring's best friend and loyal documenter, producing over 25,000 images of Haring’s ephemeral drawings in New York subways, as well as of Haring’s other work. Tseng died of AIDS-related causes at the age of thirty-nine, not long after completing 'East Meets West', and just one month after the death of Keith Haring. ❤️ 📷 @TsengKwongChi, The Gang's All Here, New York, 1983.
