Repost from @kurtsoller

I’ve always wondered how and why Jewish people become so integral to New York theater, which is something I brought up more than a year ago at work, in November 2022 — and now here we are, with our Holiday cover story, for which we gathered nearly 50 Jewish actors, playwrights, songwriters and directors on a perfect, zany September day for a group portrait taken by the one and only @jasonschmidtstudio.

Why has Jewish life in America found some of its most vivid and nuanced creative expression onstage? The Times chief theater critic Jesse Green answers that question of mine — and many others — in a brilliant cultural essay that accompanies these photos. The piece is funny, smart, strange, sometimes sad, and I hope you’ll read it and watch the mini documentary we made (link posted in my stories). This interwoven history, as Jesse writes, “has largely been based on the necessity of opening up and looking beyond, instead of suffocating in, the small space of the self — not only to avoid being pigeonholed but also to exercise the muscle of sympathy.”
