The weather was perfect, the food was divine, and the dance floor was epic—iykyk! In 2011 when my mom died, I made one of those promises you make to yourself when you are very young and dealing with loss for the first time that I’d keep her memory alive and never leave her behind. It hasn’t always been the easiest (or healthiest) and the weekend before our wedding was very hard. I worried a lot about how so much joy and grief would be able to co-exist. One of the greatest gifts was having family and friends work together to ensure my mom’s presence was felt. Her name was on the lips of so many all day and all night. Our pastors, who I grew up with and ministered to my mom, brought skeins of my mom’s yarn that she had donated to the church. During the ceremony everyone tied knots in the yarn and then it was placed over our hands for a blessing. I wore the simple gold chain she wore every day of my life growing up and carried the clutch she had on her wedding day. All week, my family, in-laws, bridesmaids, and friends showered me with love and filled in the painful gaps.
