Certainly we Americans like our lawns, ballparks and golf courses. However, it not only takes a lot of water to maintain turf, it takes a lot of fertilizer to keep the grass really green. Overall, agriculture causes the most nitrogen runoff into natural waterways, but runoff from fertilizer used on turf is a significant factor. So now that China has gotten the turf bug, we can expect an increase in algae blooms and dead zones in their rivers, lakes and estuaries.
