Bill Stocks ' main job is flying for a major airline out of O'Hare, but he also has a side business called Iowa Crop Scouts. He flies his small plane, pictured, over farmers' fields and simultaneously takes a regular digital photo and an infrared image with two cameras mounted in the belly of his plane. Back home, he combines the two images with special software to make an NDVI or Normalized Difference Vegetation Index image that can be used by farmers to evaluate the fertility of their soil. The green areas have the right amount of nitrogen, the yellow- orange don't have enough and the red are areas where no soil is visible. I took this photo using the same method with two cameras and Bill made the image for me.
