Woman using a compost toilet, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Photo by @peteressick on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック. In 2006 an American woman, Sasha Kramer, received her Ph.D. In ecology from Stanford University. That same year she decided to do something bold; she moved to Haiti and started a non-profit organization called S.O.I. L. or Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods with the motto "transforming wastes into resources." Her organization then developed ecological sanitation toilets that allow human waste to be converted into usable compost. After the 2010 earthquake in Port-au-Prince, S.O.I.L. installed toilets in the tent camps and is currently providing essential sanitation for over 14,000 people still living in the camps. Sasha Kramer proves that one person really can make a difference. IMHO our world doesn't need any more cynics, but our ailing planet needs more people with the courage and commitment of Sasha Kramer.
