Ice Formation, Stone Mountain, GA. There was a time when photo departments at newspapers and magazines were dominated by tough, cigar-chomping men. They created a macho environment that made it hard for women photographers to fit in, let alone thrive. The number of women in photojournalism has increased significantly in recent years, but presence doesn't always mean respect. So it was significant when Lynn Johnson's name was called as the winner of the Photographer's Photographer Award at the NG Seminar yesterday. The award recognizes the photographer whose published work in NG Magazine the prior year was the most innovative. The votes are cast by the NG Photographers themselves. Johnson's stories in 2012 on the Route of the Apostles and Endangered Languages were extraordinary in the way she combined fine design, compelling portraits and photo journalistic moments into the square medium format. In a twist on the "well-behaved women rarely make history," Johnson is not feisty, but has succeeded by being a non-conformist, a loner who focuses on her work and has relied on her disarming powers of observation and an affinity for the underdog to build a career. The award is well-deserved and signifies progress in our profession. It puts her among a select few women in photography that have been recognized at such a high level. It will be interesting to see how Lynn responds. It is hard for me to think of her as anything other than an outsider.
