Dr. Tom Hornbein, a part of the #heroes series, was born in St. Louis in 1930. As a climber, he is most renowned for the first ascent of the West Ridge of #everest on the @natgeo 1963 American Everest Expedition. He and partner Willi Unsoeld completed the route and descended the standard SE ridge, benighted in the highest bivouac at the time with Lute Jerstad and Barry Bishop. It was the first traverse of an 8000 m peak and the route remains unrepeated. Tom went on to author a book about the ascent which became a seminal piece in mountain literature inspiring generations to continue to carry the torch and push alpinism and it's evolution. For me, the greatest impact doesn't come from his climbing accolades, but his genuine, compassionate, no BS approach to life. Climbing has always been about passion for Tom vs career. As a doctor, he's made much greater contributions to science and our human family...his passions there speak volumes of his humility, intelligence, and true nature. Everest is not who Tom is, but merely an experience he had...it did not define him. For me, that's one of the coolest and most remarkable feats of any pioneer...to not allow a singular accomplishment to become an identity...but more so a motion in an ever flowing time line. He still gets after it...all the time. Thanks Tom for being so real, raw, and passionate. You've made the world a better place.
