Fjord of the Mountains, #Patagonia, #Chile by @gordonwiltsie As tranquil as this scene appears, it is one of the most dangerous pictures I have ever taken. At the very start of photographing my first-ever National Geographic expedition story, several of our team were so excited to see the sun appear that we jumped into our little raft and zoomed off to explore, forgetting even our life jackets. As we pulled into this little bay below a towering icefall that tumbled down from a 7,000-foot icecap in the then-unexplored Cordillera Sarmiento, I wanted a picture of my friends in front of the seracs. They let me out on a small, slippery rock and obligingly paddled into place. Then, seconds after I snapped this, much of the background ice exploded with terrifying noise and dropped straight into the water. Instantly I thought that our "Kodachrome courage" was going to drown my companions, but then I realized that their craft would float over the resulting ten-foot wave. My little island, however, would not. Within seconds I was engulfed by an ice-filled tsunami. I can still not fathom quite how I stayed afoot and shudder to think if I had not, considering that I was shod in heavy mountain boots and encircled with enough camera gear to sink like a stone. I almost certainly would have perished in the sub-freezing water before the boat could ever find me. At least I got the shot and we raced back to base camp to escape further danger and to calm our nerves with healthy doses of medicinal rum. #expeditions #adventure #glaciers
